Scorched Scenic Design

IMG_0596.JPG

This project was to design a set for Wajdi Mouawad's Scorched. Embracing the ambiguous understanding of time in this play, I designed a set that was ambiguous. Instead of basing it in location, it is based in feeling. The walls would be composed of individually lit boxes that would push the ideas of lightness and darkness in the script, creating moods rather than locations. This is roughly rendered in the 4th slide.

I wanted to take full advantage of the black box space and create a custom seating arrangement. Because the show draws inspiration to Greek tragedies, I thought amphitheater seating would add audience emersion.
